Witch play?

WITCH PLAY?

Shakespeare was a great one for puns, even in the most dramatic moments. During the witches' scene in Macbeth (Act IV, Scene I) he even jokes with the gruesome Second Apparition, a 'bloody Child':

"Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth!", it calls.

"Had I three ears, I'd hear thee," Macbeth replies.

That one gave rise to the expression 'A pun in the coven'.
