All-consuming passion

ALL-CONSUMING PASSION

We visited some very religious friends on Christmas Day, so before lunch we all went to a nearby abbey where we joined in the service with the monks.

Knowing the Abbott well, our friends asked if he would show us around, so he took us into the crypt to see the relics and then into the monastic kitchens where the monks traditionally make cheese with milk from the abbey's herd of cows. He told us they were already working on their Easter project, which was to be a huge block of cheese carved into a scene of the Crucifixion, which would later be cut up and sold for the upkeep of the abbey.

"Cheese as Christ?", I said.

"Yes, it will be quite impressive," said the Abbott, "but I'd be grateful if you would moderate your language when on holy ground."
