The World Order of Puncrafting Artistes* (WOPA) was inaugurated in (and inspired by) a Burger King in Chipping Norton in December 2014 by the creators of Anyone for Punishment as the ultimate body for preserving, championing and advancing the cause of the noble pun (also known as the paronomasia).
It aims:
- To promote and maintain the art and (considerable) craft of puncrafting;
- To champion and promote the true artistes of the genre while also encouraging young and old; beginners and amateurs;
- To foster originality and innovation in puncrafting to ensure this age-old wordplay tradition survives and flourishes in the 21st century;
- To create a global benchmark of excellence (the Pun 100 Index) for the art of puncrafting;
- To recognise, protect and nurture the various sub-categories of puns, including the compound; the graphological; the homographic (also known as the ‘antanaclasis’); the homonymic; the homophonic (‘polyptoton’); the metaphorical; the metonymic; the morphological; the recursive and others;
- To host regular competitions and bestow periodic awards that recognise the many nuances, varieties and qualities of the puncrafting world.
