A good friend of mine has written the definitive account of the Profumo affair in the early 1960s and is now acknowledged as a leading authority on the main protagonists such as John Profumo, Stephen Ward, Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies.
Trouble is I think it's become an obsession - any conversation with him now seems to hark back to it.
Yesterday, for example, we were playing golf and he hit a lovely shot into the green at a long par 3. I was so impressed I asked him what he hit.
I wasn't really surprised when he said, "Three wood, wooden tee."
