Pig-headed

PIG-HEADED

During pre-production for the BBC series Blandings, based on the books by P.G. Wodehouse, the director was working his way methodically through the casting process for the characters, having sent out precise instructions concerning the days on which auditions for particular roles would take place.

One day he was busy with a long list of hopefuls for the main role of Clarence Threepwood, 9th Earl of Emsworth, and a number of smaller characters such as Uncle Fred, Fifth Earl of Ickenham. Suddenly a lady wandered in pulling an enormous pig on a lead. "Hello, I've brought Hortense along to audition for the part of the Empress of Blandings," she announced.

"You've got the wrong day," said the rather annoyed director. "I instructed the agencies that we would fill the animal roles on Friday."

"But it's already Thursday, and I've travelled 200 miles with Hortense for this," said the crestfallen pig-owner. "What will I do with her overnight?"

"Well, I'm very sorry," said the director, "but that's your problem. You'll have to come back tomorrow. I have a schedule to stick to. I'm casting Earls before swine."
