RITE ANSWER

The English couple had bought an old farmhouse in the South of France for their retirement, but it needed a lot of work. The couple spoke no French, but after asking around the expatriate community, they were given the name of an excellent local builder of Haitian origin who, they were told, could bring the place up to the standard they wanted.

With the neighbours' help an appointment was made to look over the premises and provide an estimate.

After showing the builder around and communicating by pointing at all the problem areas, the husband finally made a half-hearted effort to speak.

"Vous... do?", he said.

The builder smiled and said, "Non, I am Catholique, Monsieur."
