Three for the price of one

THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

Two explorers were deep in the African jungle when one of them fell ill with a massive fever.

Far from civilisation, his partner despaired of finding medical help but asked their local guides if they knew of anyone. They said a doctor could be found just some four or five hours away so, dubious as he was, after making his friend as comfortable as possible, he left in the company of a guide to bring help.

To his great surprise on reaching the village, he found a smartly dressed man examining a child in its mother's lap, while sitting outside a mud and grass hut beside a brass plaque that said 'Dr Wilson Nweke MD, former intern of King's College Hospital, London'. Delighted, he explained the situation to the doctor, who at once picked up his black bag and headed into the jungle.

When they reached the camp, the sick explorer's feverish state had deteriorated considerably, leaving him hallucinating and delirious. His friend leaned over him and said, "Don't worry, I've brought help," and stood back to make room.

Peering up into the doctor's face, the sick man struggled to focus with the double- and triple-vision that was setting in. "Which doctor?", he managed to whisper.

"No, no," said his friend. "Fully qualified. King's, in fact."
