Unsavoury opinions

UNSAVOURY OPINIONS

Although unproven, rumours have circulated for decades about the cannibalistic habits of Emperor Bokassa I of Central Africa in the 1960 and '70s.

Now Bokassa's former French chef is about to publish his autobiography in which he claims he was forced to serve up political opponents for dinner. It seems Bokassa was often ill after such meals, and one day summoned the chef on suspicion of attempted assassination by poisoning his food.

Fearing for his life, the chef denied the allegations, saying, "Your Imperial Majesty, there is nothing wrong with the meat. But you will insist on eating people who disagree with you."
