Sole food

SOLE FOOD

I've always had a passion for any kind of nougat confectionery. I just love that texture and the honeyed nuttiness of it.

Imagine therefore my delight when, on a recent visit to Glasgow, I was told about a fish and chip shop that did some really innovative sweetmeats, including one using nougat and shaped for some reason into various forms of footwear. Being Scotland, of course, they deep fried them as well and this apparently gives the whole thing a deliciously sticky, elastic texture.

As soon as I had a free moment, I hot-footed it to the shop and walked in to the heady aroma of cooking oil and chocolatey, nutty sweetness. I looked at the products on display and there, beside the deep fried Mars bars, were some strange-looking items which I strongly suspected were the object of my visit.

Despite the queue to be served I had to know at once, so I called over to the two guys working behind the counter, "Pardon me boys, is that the battered nougat shoe chew?"
