Strictly confidential

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

It's been a well-kept secret, but the real reason Sir Bruce Forsyth left Strictly Come Dancing was a disagreement over the future direction of the show.

Forsyth was growing tired of watching the same dance routines every week and wanted to showcase some older, historical dance formats. He suggested bringing in the Quadrille, the Gavotte, the Sarabande and the Bourrée, for example, but BBC bosses refused to consider the idea, saying such little-known, old-fashioned styles were of no interest to a Saturday night audience for one of the most important slots in the TV schedule.

With typical panache, Forsyth immediately broke into song to announce he was quitting:

"Should old and quaint dance be forgot,
And never shown prime time?"
